In the morning, embark on a spiritual journey to the Pak Ou Caves, filled with thousands of Buddha statues. Many of these statues are broken and covered in dust and cobwebs, giving them an ancient and mystical charm. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxing cruise upstream along the Mekong River to observe life along the riverbanks. If time permits, stop at a village where Lao Lao whisky is made—beware, it’s very strong! Later, visit Wat Xieng Thong, built in 1560 on the banks of the Mekong River. It’s the most beautiful monastery in Luang Prabang, showcasing traditional Lao art and housing ancient religious artifacts. Next, head to Wat Visunalat (Wat Visoun), the oldest operating temple in Luang Prabang, constructed in 1513. It holds gilded wooden Buddhas from the 15th and 16th centuries. Also, visit That Makmo, known as the Watermelon Stupa due to its unique round shape. Continue to Wat Aham, an old temple surrounded by massive banyan trees. Later, climb the 328 or 410 steps (depending on the entrance) of Mount Phousi, the hill located in the middle of the town, offering stunning views over the temples and the rivers. Enjoy a picturesque sunset from the top. Finish the day with a visit to Talat Night Market (Hmong Market) and explore local crafts and products.
- Luang Prabang (B)
Begin the day early with the traditional ritual of giving alms to the monks. Afterwards, head to the local market to witness the morning activities. Then, explore the National Museum, formerly the Royal Palace to see the royal family’s private quarters, preserved just as they were when the family was forced to leave. Nearby, visit Hor Phra Bang, an ornate temple housing a sacred Buddha, whose statue is carried to Wat Mai during the New Year. Pack swimsuits for a refreshing dip at the stunning Kuang Si Falls. Water cascades over limestone rocks, creating numerous turquoise pools perfect for swimming. The water is cool and invigorating, offering a unique natural experience. On the way back to Luang Prabang, stop by a local village for a walk, and visit the Bear Rescue Center, founded by the “Free the Bears” Foundation. This sanctuary helps rescue bears from horrific conditions across Asia, offering them care and rehabilitation. In the evening, from 17:00 to 18:00, join the locals for a friendly game of Petanque. This popular game, which originated in southern France, is a favorite pastime for elderly locals in Luang Prabang. After the game, show appreciation by sharing some snacks and “Beer Lao” with the group.
