    Fez (B/D)

Today, step back in time and explore the rich history of Fez, one of Morocco’s most imperial and timeless cities, often regarded as the cultural heart of the country. Begin the day exploring Fez El Bali (Old Fez), a labyrinth of nearly 9,000 narrow lanes and alleys that form the ancient souks (open-air markets) of the city, founded in the 8th century. As the former Imperial capital, Fez was renowned as a medieval center of learning. At its heart is Karaouine University, one of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world. Visit the Attarine Medersa (Koranic college), a stunning example of Hispano-Moorish architecture, dating back to the 14th century. Then, discover Nejjarine Square, known for its intricate mosaic tilework and beautiful fountain, as well as the fondouq (Caravanserai), now a Museum of Carpentry. Continue with a visit to Fez El Jdid (New Fez), built in the 13th century by the Mérinides Dynasty. Here, tour the Royal Palace, mosques, madrasas (Koranic schools), souks, and city walls. A highlight of the New Fez is the Mellah, the Jewish quarter, and explore the unique Jewish architecture. Admire the splendid wrought iron windows and beautifully carved wood balconies of the old mansions, offering a fascinating glimpse into the city’s diverse heritage. The medieval Medina of Fez, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains one of the best-preserved examples of an Islamic city in the world.

    Fez – Meknes – Fez (B/D)

Today, embark on an overland journey to the Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. While exploring, encounter iconic Roman architecture, including triumphal arches, a basilica, a forum, and the impressive Capitol. Today, embark on a scenic journey to explore the natural beauty beyond Fez, heading towards the high alpine region of Ifrane National Park. This area, which includes Azrou and several Berber villages, is known for its cedar and oak forests, making it a haven for wildlife. See the ancient Gouraud’s Cedar, the oldest tree in Morocco’s Middle Atlas, standing at an impressive 130 feet tall. The park is also known for its expansive cedar forests, some of the largest in the world, and several picturesque lakes or dayats in the surrounding areas. Ifrane is often described as a little piece of Switzerland in North Africa, with its fresh air, neatly maintained streets, and lush surroundings. Built by the French in 1930, the city was designed to resemble an alpine-style resort and remains a popular getaway for picnickers in the summer and skiers in the winter.
